Moms vs. Billionaire Tax Cuts: Fighting for Families
As moms, we know how hard it is to stretch every dollar. We budget carefully, make tough choices, and do everything we can to provide for our families. But while we're making sacrifices, billionaires are getting a $4.5 trillion tax break, paid for by slashing programs that help working families. The American Health and Family Security Act does just that, gutting Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which millions of families rely on.
The Billionaire Tax Cut Myth
We’ve all heard the argument: “Billionaires create jobs and wealth for thousands, so tax cuts for them benefit everyone.” But this is a myth. Here’s why:
Billionaires don’t create jobs, demand does. Companies don’t hire more workers just because they get tax breaks. They hire when there’s demand for their products and services, which comes from everyday working families having money to spend.
Most billionaire wealth sits in stocks, not wages. When billionaires get tax cuts, they don’t put that money back into the economy. Instead, they buy more stocks, real estate, or stash it offshore—none of which creates good-paying jobs.
Past tax cuts for the rich have failed working families. The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) slashed corporate tax rates but didn’t raise wages or create sustainable job growth. Instead, corporations spent their tax savings on stock buybacks, rewarding wealthy shareholders while keeping wages stagnant.
Who Pays the Price? Moms and Kids
The cuts in this bill hit moms and children the hardest. Taking funding from Medicaid, SNAP, and CHIP means:
More kids without healthcare. Over 130,599 children and families in Georgia’s 3rd Congressional District alone rely on these programs, and this bill slashes $1.63 billion from their care.
More moms struggling to put food on the table. SNAP cuts mean thousands of families will go hungry.
Higher medical costs for families. Without Medicaid, emergency room visits will rise, putting families deeper into debt.
Moms Know There’s a Better Way
Instead of handing billionaires another tax break, we should be making sure moms and families have the resources they need to thrive. That means:
Ensuring the wealthy pay their fair share by closing tax loopholes and making sure corporations contribute.
Investing in programs that help families, because healthcare, food security, and childcare should be accessible to every mom, not just the wealthiest.
Building an economy that works for everyone, not just the ultra-rich.
What Every Mom Can Do
Speak Up: Call your representatives and tell them that moms don’t support billionaire tax cuts at the expense of families.
Get Involved: Support advocacy groups that fight for working families.
Vote for Families, Not Billionaires: Policies that affect our kids’ futures are on the ballot so make sure your voice is heard.
Moms know how to budget, but we also know what's fair. And giving billionaires another tax cut while cutting programs for families? That’s just wrong. Let’s stand up and demand a budget that puts families first.
